FAQ

Explore our FAQs to learn more about the differences between laser systems and CIJ/TIJ inkjet technologies, safety classifications such as Class 1 and Class 4 lasers, and what to expect in terms of consumables, maintenance, and performance.

Whether you’re comparing marking methods, considering a new system, or simply looking to understand which solution best fits your application, this guide covers the most common questions to help you make an informed decision.

Which solution is for me?

Laser marking uses a focused beam of light to permanently engrave or mark a surface, whereas CIJ/TIJ systems apply ink onto the product. Laser produces a permanent, high-precision mark with no consumables, while inkjet is ideal for high-speed, variable printing where non-permanent codes are acceptable.

Laser is generally the best choice for lifetime traceability, unique part IDs, and compliance marking.

Inkjet is ideal for short-life or disposable products where speed matters more than permanence.

Laser systems generally have the lowest long-term cost due to zero consumables and minimal maintenance.

CIJ/TIJ has a lower upfront cost but carries recurring consumable and servicing expenses.

CIJ and TIJ inkjet are typically faster for high-volume, fast-moving packaging lines.

Laser is extremely fast for static or semi-static marking but may require integration considerations for very high-speed lines.

Laser - Your questions, answered.

A Class 1 laser is fully enclosed and safe for operators without special PPE—ideal for toolrooms, workshops, and educational environments.

A Class 4 laser is an open system with a visible beam path. It offers maximum flexibility for marking large or irregular objects but requires appropriate safety measures, PPE, and controlled operation.

Fiber lasers excel on metals, coated materials, and many plastics. Some softer plastics may require testing. UV lasers are better for organic materials like paper, wood, and packaging films.

You would choose a Class 4 system when you need to mark:

  • Large components
  • Moving production lines
  • Tools still mounted inside machines
  • Products that don’t fit inside an enclosure

For everyday small-part marking, Class 1 is typically the safer and easier option.

No. Laser marking systems do not use inks, solvents, or cartridges. This keeps running costs extremely low and eliminates consumable waste.

Very little. Fiber lasers are solid-state devices with long operational lifespans and minimal servicing.

Inkjet - Your questions, answered

Yes. Inkjet systems require ink, solvent/make-up fluid, and occasional filter changes. These consumables are a core part of their operating costs but allow for extremely fast, non-contact printing.

Inkjet printers require regular cleaning, fluid refilling, and scheduled servicing.
